Our Story
There are no shortcuts on the things that matter.
You already know this. You felt it the first time you held your newborn and realised nothing in the world could speed up the part where they learn to trust your face. You felt it the first time you tried to build something honest from nothing and discovered that the months take what the months take. You feel it every time you hear a brand promise overnight results and something in you quietly says, no, not really.
A For Apothecary was built on that same instinct.
How AFA started
Hi, I'm Jingyi. Introvert. Coffee devotee. Nature seeker. Mother of three. Founder of A For Apothecary.
This brand began in 2018 with a small, specific problem. I was looking for a balm I could trust on my baby's skin. Something genuinely natural, free from anything unnecessary, safe enough for the most vulnerable skin in my home. I couldn't find it. So I went to find out why.
I studied skincare formulation. I learned how natural ingredients actually behave, how they interact, how they break down, how they need to be blended properly to do what they claim. It is far more complex than the industry makes it look.
And the deeper I went, the clearer it became. The word natural on a label means almost nothing. The bar was never set. Clean is whatever the brand decides it means. Gentle often hides the same compounds the EU has banned for decades. The industry has been quietly lying to women, to mothers, to anyone who has ever picked up a bottle and trusted what was on the front of it.
I started AFA because I could not unsee it.
The first product I made was Baby Balm. Six ingredients. Two years of formulation. Over twenty trials. A creamy golden balm made slowly, thoughtfully, by hand. Because the smallest, most fragile skin in my home was the one most exposed to the industry's shortcuts, and starting there felt like the truest place to begin.
What we believe
The things worth keeping are the things that took time to build.
A skin barrier rebuilds over weeks, not minutes. A relationship with a grower deepens over years. A team you can trust takes patience and shared mornings and long stretches of unglamorous work together. A formulation that genuinely works gets tested, reformulated, tested again, sometimes scrapped, sometimes set aside for a year until the right ingredient arrives.
This is how things have always been made by the people who cared enough to do it properly.
The skincare industry has just stopped doing it. It has trained customers to expect overnight results. Quick fixes. New launches every quarter. A miracle ingredient every season. The result is skin that keeps getting worse, and shelves that keep getting fuller, and a customer who keeps trying because the industry keeps promising.
We refuse that pace. Not as a marketing position. As a belief.
There are no shortcuts on the things that matter. We have built AFA around that one truth.
What it means in practice
Our formulations are made slowly. Every ingredient earns its place. We work with botanicals, oils, and active ingredients in their purest form, blended properly, not layered theatrically.
Our products are made in small batches by people who care. Not because it scales easily. Because no one else was willing to make them the way we needed them made.
Our standards are voluntary. Every formula goes through EU cosmetic safety assessments. We run human voluntary clinical trials. We back every claim with proper documentation and safety data. No law in Singapore requires us to do this. We do it anyway, because the smallest skin in the family is the only standard worth holding, and yours deserves the same.
Our shelf life is shorter than the industry standard. Eight months unopened. Three months after opening. Because conventional preservation systems were a compromise we refused to make.
Our team has grown slowly. Our customer base has grown slowly. Our product range has grown slowly. By design. Brands that grow too fast tend to become brands that compromise.
We are not in a hurry. We are here for the long version.
Where our ingredients come from
Behind every ingredient lies a relationship.
Oat lipids from organic farming in the Nordic region.
Silk peptides sustainably sourced from the silk industry.
Organic beeswax from dedicated farmers in Australia.
Coconut oil from a family farm in Thailand, pressed with care, paid with fairness.
Nilotica shea butter that gives women in East Africa both independence and sustenance.
Calendula from soil we trust. Sustainable silk peptides because the silk industry now allows them. Each ingredient sourced from people whose names we know, whose work we have witnessed firsthand, whose hands we have shaken.
Each jar is a link in a human chain. From the soil, to the hands that harvest, to the ritual on your skin.
To choose well is to care deeply. To care deeply takes time. There are no shortcuts.
Different products. Different skin. One principle.
We began as a baby skincare brand because that's where the question was most urgent. But over the years, the families who trusted us grew. More children arrived. Mothers took the same care into their own routines. Today AFA holds space for every stage of life.
Baby Balm. For the most fragile barrier in the household. The skin most exposed to industry shortcuts. Made first, because starting with the smallest skin felt like the truest place to begin.
Aura Serum. For adult skin that has been over treated. Restoring systems, not managing symptoms. Built to compound, not to spike.
Kintsu Cream. For daily barrier repair. Rebuilding rather than soothing. The same intentionality given to your skin as to a newborn's.
Different products. Different skin. One belief. That the foundation matters more than the surface, and the slow path is the only one worth taking.
For the people who already understood
You have always known that real care takes time. You don't believe in shortcuts in building a dream, in great relationships, in creating amazing work, in tending to your body. You feel the cost of the world's impatience and have been quietly resisting it for years.
For newborns. For tired mothers. For sensitive souls. For you, whose skin needs remembering. Who has been looking for skincare made the way things used to be made, by people who genuinely cared what ended up in the bottle.
You are not in a hurry. Neither are we.
Welcome.
With love,
Jingyi
