What Are Bioactive Silk Peptides?

Silk peptides are small proteins derived from silk. Traditional silk peptides in skincare are simply hydrolysed, which means the silk protein is broken down into smaller pieces so it can be added to formulations. They can add a soft, moisture-retaining quality to the skin, but they don't fundamentally change how your skin behaves.

Bioactive silk peptides are different. Through advanced biotechnology, silk protein is transformed into peptides that don't just sit on the skin. They actively communicate with your skin cells. They signal your skin to increase its own natural regeneration processes. This means old, tired, and damaged skin cells are replaced with new, healthier ones more efficiently.

Look for the word "bioactive." If a product simply mentions "silk peptides" or "hydrolysed silk," that is likely the passive form. Bioactive silk peptides should be described as such, and their function (supporting protein production, skin regeneration, or specific proteins) should be explained.

Check for sustainability certifications. Truly premium bioactive silk peptides are naturally derived through biotechnology and are biodegradable, cruelty-free, and made using upcycled silk. If sustainability information isn't provided, ask.

Look for barrier-supporting formulations. Bioactive silk peptides work best when formulated alongside supportive ingredients like ceramides, humectants, and gentle botanicals. They are not meant to be paired with harsh actives, fragrance, or irritating ingredients that undo the barrier support.
