There is a Japanese art called kintsugi.
When a piece of pottery breaks, it is not thrown away or hidden. The pieces are gathered and joined back together with gold. The cracks become visible. The repair becomes part of the object. And the bowl, once broken, becomes more beautiful than it was before it broke.
Kintsugi rests on a quiet idea. That something which has been through difficulty is not lesser for having been through it. That the marks of repair are not flaws to be concealed but evidence of having been cared for enough to be mended. That a thing made whole again, with patience and intention, is more valuable than something that has never been tested.
Kintsu Cream is built on that philosophy.
What Kintsu is
Kintsu is a daily face cream formulated for adult skin that has been through things. It is not a transformative product. It is a restorative one. It works with the skin's own regenerative biology to support what your skin already knows how to do, when given the time, the patience, and the right support.
We have spent close to two years developing this formulation. Multiple trials. Clinical testing. Dermatologist approval. A long search for the right ingredients and the right manufacturing process. We could have launched it six months ago. We did not, because it was not yet what we wanted to put into the world.
The active ingredient at its heart is sustainable silk peptides. These were not commercially available as a sustainable option until recently. We waited for them. Silk peptides naturally mimic the structure of human skin, helping to support the barrier, retain moisture, and signal regeneration at the cellular level.
Alongside them sit barrier rebuilding actives, gentle barrier support, and the same restrained formulation philosophy that runs through all of AFA's products. Nothing unnecessary. Nothing layered theatrically. Every ingredient earning its place.
Who Kintsu is for
This cream was made for adult skin that knows it has been through seasons.
For mothers who carried children and emerged with skin that does not feel like their own anymore. For women in their thirties whose skin became reactive after years of doing what the industry told them to do. For women approaching or moving through perimenopause whose skin texture, hydration, and resilience are quietly shifting. For anyone who has tried serum after serum and routine after routine and ended up with skin that is more reactive, more tired, and less recognisable than where they began.
For anyone who has stopped believing skincare can make any meaningful difference, and is quietly hoping that one day it might again.
Kintsu is not for someone looking for an overnight transformation. There is no overnight transformation. Kintsu is for someone willing to give their skin the slow, consistent, patient support it needs to rebuild itself.
What Kintsu does
Kintsu works in three quiet ways.
It supports barrier regeneration. The outer layer of your skin, the barrier, is what holds moisture in and keeps irritants out. When the barrier is compromised, skin becomes reactive, dehydrated, and inflamed. Kintsu's formulation supports the barrier's natural rebuilding process by providing the lipid structure and signalling molecules the skin uses to repair itself.
It deeply hydrates without weighing down. The cream's texture is buildable, light, and absorbs into the skin without sitting on top of it. Layers well with serums. Works as a daily moisturiser. Designed to be used morning and evening as the final step of a simple routine.
It supports skin regeneration with sustainable silk peptides. The silk peptides in Kintsu signal repair and support the natural turnover of skin cells. The result, over weeks of consistent use, is skin that becomes more resilient, more even, and more itself.
It is made to work everywhere your skin asks for support. Most creams are formulated for the face. A separate, heavier cream is sold for the body. We formulated Kintsu to do both, because skin is one continuous organ and we did not see a reason to fragment it. The same restorative care that supports the skin on your face also supports the skin on your arms, your hands, the spots on your stomach where pregnancy stretched, the parts of you that have asked for repair. It is uncommon for a cream to genuinely do both well. We made it this way because that is how we wanted to use it ourselves.
We are very clear about what Kintsu is not. It is not a wrinkle eraser. It is not a quick fix. It is not a substitute for sunscreen. It does not contain retinol, acids, or aggressive actives that promise dramatic transformation.
It is a daily cream made to do what good daily creams have always done. Support the skin you have, slowly and well, until it remembers how to look after itself.
What goes into Kintsu
Every ingredient was chosen with care. The hero ingredient is sustainable silk peptides, sourced from a supplier whose practices we have verified personally. Alongside the silk peptides are barrier supporting lipids, gentle microbiome stabilisers, hydration retaining humectants, and a small number of botanical extracts chosen for their specific contribution to barrier function.
There are no fragrances. No essential oils. No fillers. No alcohols that would compromise the formulation. The cream is suitable for sensitive skin and meets the same standards we apply to our products for babies.
Kintsu is made by hand in small batches at our own facility. We tested through eighteen formulation iterations because the cream needed to do three different things well, and we refused to launch it until all three were working.
When Kintsu launches
Kintsu Cream launches in the second half of 2026, around August or September. Like the philosophy it carries, we are releasing it slowly, only when it is fully ready.
We will release it first to our member's circle, the small group of customers who registered their interest in advance.
How to register your interest
If you would like to be among the first to receive Kintsu when it launches, you can register your interest on the Kintsu product page.
AFA members receive two things.
First access to Kintsu when it launches, before the public release.
An invitation to a small intimate kintsugi workshop with our founder before the public launch, subject to seat availability. Together we will mend a small piece of pottery the traditional way and talk about the philosophy of kintsugi as we have lived it, the journey of developing Kintsu Cream, and the formulation choices we made along the way. You can ask anything.
There is no purchase required to register. There is no discount being offered. What we are offering is access, story, and time with us before Kintsu reaches the public shelves.
Follow the journey
The story of how Kintsu came to be will unfold publicly on our Instagram between now and launch. The formulation diary. The supplier relationships. The early prototypes. The quiet moments in the lab. The reasons we have made the choices we have made.
We chose to share it openly rather than privately because we believe a brand worth trusting is one that lets you see the work, not just the result. Follow along at @aforapothecary and @jing_and_tonic to see Kintsu being built in real time.
A closing note
Kintsu is the product we have wanted to make for years. It carries the longest formulation journey of any AFA product so far. It also carries a philosophical centre that goes deeper than skincare. The idea that what has been through something, and has been mended with care, can be more beautiful than what has never been tested.
That is true for pottery. We have come to believe it is true for skin, for relationships, for the parts of our lives that have asked us to grow. And we hope it might be true for your skin, too.
With love,
Jingyi
